Since I've dropped about 40 pounds so far, I decided to mix things up and actually go for a run today.  I've done it a few times but I'm trying to save the integrity of my knees for race day.  That's why the majority of my time belongs to that mythical creature "Savage Henry".  It allows me to keep most of my xxxl frame off my paws.

I was planning on going for a longer run but it was about 15 degrees and my lungs burned like there was no tomorrow.

I went for a run through an area named "Hobo Jungle" - notorious for it once-famed homeless population.  I saw an old man drive by with mouth wide-open and had to swerve to avoid a parking meter.  I'm guessing he couldn't believe his eyes when he saw this running down the street...




And as a matter of fact, I noticed several double and triple takes... as well as some intentional "don't look at him" looks.  I found it pretty amusing.  I ran by a daycare center and a woman in her early 30's turned her son so he couldn't see me run by (as if it were an actual car wreck or something like that).

I ran with a guy I know and found myself wanting to shove him into traffic everytime he got within swinging distance.  It was just an impulse and I obviously didn't act on it.

I think it's because I'm so angry with myself when I first start running...

It's half "I suck" and half "I can't believe I let myself get like this".  It's okay though because I'm fighting hard to make this happen.  And it feels good!

I'm going to try to post more often and record some of my training efforts as has been requested by dozens and dozens of people.

So as it goes for today...

I was on the road for 7 miles (amazing I know) and then hit the bike for about 45 minutes afterwards.



P.S.  Thank you to everybody who has chipped in with the charity!  It means a lot.  It makes me sleep better at night knowing that I'm doing more than wasting everybody's valuable time with this site.

      I think it is excellent if you keep up alternating running with daily Savage Henry (do you use it a few times a day or once a day??). It is very important that you build up weight bearing leg strength and heart, which running will do. I am hopeing your SH has resistance levels on it and gets your heart going?

      Sorry that you get such reactions from people when you run. Perhaps some of the more intellegent observers grasp the whole picture and think: wow. Now there's someone who has courage and is making a change?

      It's really admirable what you are doing. More power to you.

      PS, my dogs love going for runs so if you want a Rottweiler to keep you company you can borrow one of mine. They are very friendly and charming but perhaps I can teach them to snarl at mean people for you.

      Congratulations again on your Boston finish. I agree with many of your fans that a triathlon should be your next event. As a former runner bitten by the triathlon bug, I can testify that the variety is not only better for your joints but also better for you sanity. If you want to do it with fanfare then enter the Lifetime Fitness Triathlon in Minneapolis. It draws an international professional field as well as thousands of age group hacks like us that just want to get fit or stay fit. You can raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and get training at the same time. Or, I would be happy to set you up with a program (I've done dozens of sprints and one Ironman). My 7 year old niece is a leukemia survivor and I've been through the TNT program, it is wonderful. It's just across the border from God's Country (I'm a Cheesehead too). The event is July 14th, you have plenty of time to train and could easily raise the dough. Think about it!
